Sound operated timer is an electronics device that can switch on timing device by the sound of clap.

It switches ON a timer when a noise is detected. The circuit can sense the sound from a distance of 1-2 meters. Condenser Mic picks up sound vibrations caused by the sound. The main component of this device which serve as the sensor is the Electric Condenser Mic, which has been used as a sound sensor. Condenser Mic basically converts sound energy into electrical energy, that in turns the timer ON. This sound operated timer is based on LM324 quad-operational amplifier and NE555 timer. Time delay can be set from a few seconds to 30 minutes. It can also be used as a sound sensitive burglar alarm.

CHAPTER ONE

1.0                                                        INTRODUCTION

  • PROJECT BACKGROUND

In the present modern world, switching circuits have become an indispensible part of our life. Right from your mobile phone to the various security systems, they can be seen everywhere. Even the horn of your motor car is a kind of switch used to warn people and vehicles in front of its presence. The sole purpose of a switch is to activate or deactivate a device. They may be in the form of a visual indicator, for example a flashing light, but switching circuit in the form of an audible tone or siren is more widely accepted as it is able to wake up even the unaware and the oblivious.

The word “switch” is a very common name found in almost all aspects electrical/electronic engineering. Switches can be found in information technology computers, telecommunications, power electronics, power systems, instrumentation etc.

This work is on sound operated timer. Sound operated timer is all about automating real life timing devices using sound signals.

1.2                     PROBLEM STATEMENT

The need to safeguard our environment is of paramount important most especially at night when a security personal falls asleep. In other to ensure a high level of security a sound operated timer was invented to activate a timer whenever a sound was introduced to the sensor (microphone).

  • PROJECT MOTIVATION

The motivation of this project is to fulfil the following;

  • To eliminate the stress in using human labour
  • The provision of remote switching helps to safe guard operators and equipment.
  • To ensure a reliable and safe method of switching domestic and industrial devices.
    • OBJECTIVE OF STUDY

The objective of this project is to construct a noise controlling device which can be used to activate a timing circuit using LM324 quad-operational amplifier and NE555 timer

     1.5                                                         SCOPE OF THE PROJECT

The set up consists of a Mic that receives the sound of its surrounding to give it to the system for processing. With an impulsive sound such as a clap, the timer circuit gets triggered to turn on a relay. Turning on the relay results in turning ON of the load that is connected to the relay. This load remains ON for a stipulated period of time and then is turned OFF by the timer circuit. After this it waits for another clap sound to start the load again and the cycle goes on. In this way this project aims at automating the particular load connected to it with the help of a symbol of clap or other sharp source of noise from the user.

The Mic is a transducer that converts voice signals into electrical signals so that we can process it in our circuit. What we are doing in the processing part is that we are amplifying the electrical pulses coming in from the mic. Once these signals are amplified they are clearer to the trigger circuit as a clap signal. Once this amplified clap signal reaches the trigger circuit the trigger of the load happens. The trigger circuit used over here is a 555 IC which is used in its mono-stable state. This state allows the IC to trigger the relay and hence the load with a single input pulse and let the load remain ON for the particular amount of time as per its time constant value.

  • SIGNIFICANCE OF PROJECT

Sound Operated Timer Project is a multipurpose project. With the help of this project we can automate the task of turning ON a device and turning it back OFF. All this happens just with the sound of a clap in this project. The set up consists of a Mic that receives the sound of its surrounding to give it to the system for processing. With an impulsive sound such as a clap, the timer circuit gets triggered to turn on a relay.

1.7                                      ADVANTAGES OF THE PROJECT

  1. Energy efficient
    2. Low cost and reliable circuit
    3. Complete elimination of manpower
    4. High Accuracy

1.8                                    APPLICATIONS OF THE PROJECT

The major advantage of this project is that you can turn something on and off from any location in the room simply by clapping your hands.

The primary application involves an elderly or mobility- impaired person. This device can be generally used for a light, television, radio or similar electronic device that the person will want to turn on/off from bed.

This device can also be use as burglar alarm to monitor an environment. It can also use in military to activate weapons like automatic timing bomb.

1.9                                         METHODOLOGY

To achieve the aim and objectives of this work, the following are the steps involved:

  1. Study of the previous work on the project so as to improve it efficiency.
  2. Draw a block diagram.
  • Test for continuity of components and devices,
  1. Design and calculation for the device was carried out.
  2. Studying of various component used in circuit.
  3. Construction of the circuit was carried out.
  • Finally, the whole device was cased and final test was carried out.

1.10                                                      PROJECT ORGANISATION

The work is organized as follows: chapter one discuses the introductory part of the work, chapter two presents the literature review of the study, chapter three describes the methods applied, chapter four discusses the results of the work, chapter five summarizes the research outcomes and the recommendations.
