The subject matter of this study is the Effect of Poor Learning Environment on the Academic Achievement of Primary School Pupils in Nkanu East Local Government Area of Enugu State. There are over fifty-five (55) primary schools in Nkanu, out of which five (5) primary schools were randomly sampled and used for this research work. The literature was reviewed under the following sub-headings: the concept of learning environment, functions of physical and social learning environment to academic performance in primary schools, brief review of the goals of primary education in Nigeria, and causes of poor performance of pupils in primary schools in Nigeria.
The instrument used to obtain information was questionnaire items drawn from four (4) research questions. The data was collected and analysed using frequency tables and percentages. From the analysis of data, the following were found out: that pupils of Nkanu East Local Government Area performed well in exams and continuous assessment test; that primary schools in Nkanu East had basic educational facilities in their primary schools; that the availability of conducive learning environment was responsible for the pupils’ good academic performance and that there strategies are that needed to be adopted to improved more on the pupils academic performance. They include funding and training of personnels.
Based on the finding, the researchers recommend that the schools should be adequately funded, by both private individuals and government; teachers should be properly trained; while the pupils should be focused more on oral reading and practice of cultural skills.
