Design And Construction Of Bulk Layer Earth Drilling Machine

ABSTRACT

This work is a bulk layer earth drilling machine. Drilling involves making a hole in a material using cutting equipment and can be done on the earth’s surface. A bulk layer earth drilling machine is a drilling method that uses a large helical shaped screw to extract material from the ground. When used for drilling, the auger drill bit screws into the soil and material is automatically moved up the shaft of the rotation device.

The purpose of this work is to increase the productivity and related traditional methods in agriculture.

CHAPTER ONE

1.0                                                        INTRODUCTION

1.1                                           BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY

Drilling is the act of making a hole in a material using cutting equipment and can be done on the earth’s surface. Hole drilling on the earth’s surface is primarily done for several purposes, which include erection of structures, extraction of oil or planting trees. The structures erected in drilled holes include electricity poles, flag posts, masts; buildings etc [1].

Drilling for a bulk layer earth is a cutting process that uses a drill bit to cut or enlarge a hole of circular cross-section in solid materials. The drill bit is a rotary cutting tool, often multipoint. The bit is pressed against the work piece and rotated at rates from hundreds to thousands of revolutions per minute [2]. This forces the cutting edge against the work piece, cutting off chips from the hole as it is drilled.

Boring is used to achieve greater accuracy of the diameter of a hole, and can be used to cut a tapered hole. Boring can be viewed as the internal-diameter counterpart to turning, which cuts external diameters. In combine drilling and boring machine both the drilling and boring operations are done in a single phase. This is used for mass production, a great time saver where many pieces of jobs having many holes are to be drilled. It can used in mechanical industry in order to increase the productivity of machining systems [3].

In today’s market the customer demands the product of right quality, right quantity, right cost, & at right time. Therefore it is necessary to improve productivity as well as quality. One way to achieve this is by using combine machine. On the other hand, in order to meet quality requirements of final product [3].

1.2                                  PROBLEM STATEMENT

In the last decade, drilling of earth hole is performed manually and traditionally with shovel which wastes time, cost energy loss, tedious and not efficient. Due to their inefficiency, there has been need for a better way. This machine is used to drill earth layer with easy, which is fast and simple and at the same time east to operate [3][4].

1.3                                                   AIM OF THE PROJECT

The main aim of this work is to build a machine that uses a drill bit to cut or enlarge a hole of circular cross-section in solid materials. The

1.4                                          ADVANTAGES OF THE PROJECT

  1. With the help of this machine we can do drilling operation together in single
  2. Desired depth of the hole can be
  3. The size of machine is smaller than the older machine so it is very simple to move it from one place to
  4. Machine can be easily transported. The overall space required is also
  5. The efficiency of this machine is better than the older
  6. The machine is very simple to
  7. No need of skilled operator for the

1.5                                          APPLICATION OF THE PROJECT

The device used to drill hole for electricity poles, flag posts, masts; buildings etc. extraction of oil involves a vigorous drilling exercise of extracting oil from depths of over 800 feet. Hole drilling for Planting trees is a major activity that involves digging holes using either a drilling machine mechanism [3].

1.6                                                 SCOPE OF THE PROJECT

This machine is drilling equipment used for agriculture purpose. It can be used to drill in soil. It can be tractor operated. It consists of a frame of a cultivator, universal joint, spur gears, bearings, chain sprocket, tractor, drill bit. Frame is attached to the tractor universal joint connects the spur gears and shaft, drill bit is mounted below the frame and is connected to spur gears through chain drive. Power transmission:- tractor’s shaft- universal joint – spur gears – chain drive – drill bit [5][6].

1.7                                  PURPOSE OF THE STUDY

The main purpose of this work is make drilling of earth layer easy, fast and simple.

1.8                                                         LIMITATION OF THE PROJECT

  1. It is difficult to control due to the weight of the device
  2. It requires considerable muscular effort and difficult to maintain because of the difficult operative nature of the motorized drilling bit. With the hand held motorized augers, the hole drilling process is labor intensive.
  • This machine tends to scatter dirt away from the holes being drilled by the auger, resulting in more difficult effort to pack soil around during the process
  1. The movement of machine around is
  2. The cost of machines involved is high

1.9                                                         PROJECT ORGANISATION

The work is organized as follows: chapter one discuses the introductory part of the work, chapter two presents the literature review of the study, chapter three describes the methods applied, chapter four discusses the results of the work, chapter five summarizes the research outcomes and the recommendations.
