Design And Construction Of A Smart Pool

ABSTRACT

Due to the increase in drowning cases, the lack of pure water, and increasing or decreasing the temperature of water in the pool. So, monitoring of swimming pool has become one of the daily routine tasks that may consume time and effort and may be dangerous at times in deep pools. The need for an automated system arose to monitor the swimming pool and the ability to know data remotely through the webpage.

Our project seeks to provide a system that performs several operations, including checking the quality of water. Also, this system checks the temperature of the water in the pool to avoid some problems that may occur, especially when the water freezes. Also, the system measures the temperature of pool water then the system will turn on the heater. This system also deals with drowning cases that may occur. Therefore, this system provides the inhabitant with all the information that it may need from anywhere he is located through a webpage without time or effort and without the need to manually check the pool.

The system has been built and verified to meet the requirements of this project, and it was found that it performs as it should and meets the needs of the project.

CHAPTER ONE

1.0                                          INTRODUCTION

1.0                                     Background of the study

Information and communications technology, over the years, has been progressively present in human life, being a branch that is in constant evolution and an essential part in our everyday life. With this evolution there is a growing number of physical objects and devices connected to the Internet, giving rise to the concept of the Internet of Things (IoT) (Al-Fuqaha et al., 2015). IoT consists of a network of physical objects that are able of being connected to the Internet, identifying themselves, and communicating with each other to achieve a common goal. The main purpose of this technology is to exchange and update data between physical objects and hence to achieve an optimum performance (Saha et al., 2017).

When talking about IoT it is also useful to approach another concept called Wireless Sensor Networks (WSN), a technology that is inherent in the development of smart systems. Recently, IoT and WSN have been great bets in the development of monitoring and control systems by researchers (Marais et al., 2017). This capability of monitoring and control covers a growing range of applications, among which some related to monitoring of swimming pools.

Swimming pool conditions directly depend on how well their chemical properties are monitored (Gouws et al., 2017). Its maintenance requires the performance of some tests that may be more complex when performed by a human. Therefore, it is important to implement a sensor network that is able to perform those tests correctly and more precisely. To optimize its daily maintenance, instead of manually evaluate the water properties (pH, chlorine, water level, temperature), machine room condition and surrounding space quality, comes up the proposed system, which main purpose is to control and monitoring swimming pools automatically.

Sustainability assumes an important role in preserving the planet Earth sources. Thus, it is increasingly important for the society to have sustainable attitudes in simple daily activities and particularly in the development of new technologies. In the specific case of swimming pools, it becomes relevant to monitor the water and energy consumption levels through a sensor network and, consequently, to adjust their consumption, so that there is no waste of those resources for purposes deemed not essential for the correct operation and maintenance of swimming pools.

Taking into consideration that the incorrect use of fresh water in recreational activities is nowadays a big concern as well as the need to keep track of water quality in order to inform the user about potential risk situations, swimming pool monitoring systems is something we can see in numerous automation projects already developed.

The Smart Pool System is an internet of thing (IoT) based device that is capable of automating the pool processes by Drowning alert (warning) for the pool, knowing the water quality and water temperature.

The project aims to design a system that we will be commanded the Arduino microcontroller through a webpage to control the problem of drowning, water quality, and water temperature.

Where the system finds solutions to the following problems: temperature drop below 18 degrees Celsius, Low water quality (the degree of pollution of the swimming pool water exceeds 700), and the case of drowning in the water as follow:

  1. If the temperature drops below 18 degrees Celsius, the system turns on the heater which raises the temperature of the
  2. If the water quality drops so that the water pollution exceeds 700 degrees, the system withdraws all the water from the pump to replace it with clean water.
  • To avoid drowning, the person dressed a hat, if the water touches this hat for 15 continuous seconds the buzzer will start working and beep.

1.2                                          Problem statement

Many problems and dangers are related to swimming pools, people were drowned while swimming especially children, pollution of the pool water and the presence of sediments inside it which makes it unsuitable for swimming and taking into account the ideal water temperature appropriate for each category age.

This device was carried out to provide solution to above mentioned problems. The main objective of our project is to design a simple, easy to install, microcontroller-based circuit to monitor the pool. It communicates with the various sensor modules in real-time to control the important parameter. Communication will be wirelessly to make the system expandable in the future. The user has only to start the system with one click on a webpage.

1.3      Aim and objectives of the study

The main aim of this study is to build a smart pool system that will provide resources savings for the final user in financial and natural resources, contributing to a sustainable environment.

The main objectives of this system are:

  • To build the system prototype
  • To reduce the requirements for human intervention in the swimming pool maintenance
  • The system will be sent a notification (warning) to the webpage in drowning
  • The system will be able to check the quality of
  • The system will be able to check the water temperature at a certain

1.4      Motivation and importance of the project

One of the most important motives for this project in the current era is that one of the biggest problems the world faces is drowning (especially for children), also low water temperature which leads to dangerous diseases like respiratory diseases and low water quality that affects the health of people who swim in swimming pools where it leads to serious skin diseases especially water that contains chlorine, so a system is required to ensure that the pool is used wisely.

It will also have many advantages for swimming pools. Pool control will become much easier and more convenient, We have chosen this project to make swimming pools easier to care for and to handle most efficiently, to ensure a safe environment for the human body, and to eliminate the difficulties involved in the system by minimizing human intervention as much as possible.

1.5      Scope of the study

The scope of this study covers providing a new scheme for monitoring and controlling the swimming pool’s quality through a low-cost system based on wireless sensor networks, which can reduce the requirements for human intervention in the swimming pool maintenance. The proposed system enables users with administrator permissions to control actions in the swimming pool, in order to stabilize some required parameters for its good quality using microcontroller and sensors.

1.6      Significance of the project

This project will serve as a means of providing information and management system for swimming pools. This system consists of a sensor node interfacing with sensors (to measure pH, chlorine level, temperature, cleaner mobility and water level) and actuators, and a web-based user interface that can be accessed remotely for controlling the system. The project has really accurate sensors, providing an optimum maintenance of the swimming pools. However, the implemented sensors are extremely expensive, which creates a system that is not easily accessible to all users.
