Design And Construction Of A Smart Lock Door System Using Facial Recognition

ABSTRACT

The most important of feature of any home security system is to detect the people who enter or leave the house. Instead of monitoring that through passwords or pins unique faces can be made use of as they are one’s biometric trait. These are innate and cannot be modified or stolen easily. The level of security can be raised by using face detection. The proposed face recognition door lock security system has been developed to prevent robbery in highly secure areas like home environment with lesser power consumption and more reliable standalone security device for both Intruder detection and for door security. Whenever the person comes in front of the door, it recognizes the face and if it is registered then it unlocks the door, if the face is not registered it will raise an alarm and clicks a picture and send it on the registered number. This is how the system works.

CHAPTER ONE

1.1                                                        INTRODUCTION

The security situation in many parts of the world today leaves much to be desired. In Nigeria particularly, the prevalence of armed robbers and other groups that constitute nuisance to the society has led to the loss of lives and properties worth millions of dollars. Many of the attacks that led to the loss have occurred in the homes or in guarded compounds and the attacks took place in spite of the existence of seemingly impregnable security gates that were designed to ward off intruders. The needs for electronically controlled gates that have superior security features to those operated manually thus exist and have been on the increase in recent times.

This work is on a smart lock door system using facial recognition. The face recognition door lock security system has been developed to prevent robbery in highly secure areas like home environment with lesser power consumption and more reliable standalone security device for both Intruder detection and for door security. Whenever the person comes in front of the door, it recognizes the face and if it is registered then it unlocks the door, if the face is not registered it will raise an alarm and clicks a picture and send it on the registered number.

This device have the ability to captured an image and pre-processed it like converting, re-sizing and cropping. Then face detection and recognition are performed. Once the face is recognized by the classifier based on a pre-stored image library, the image will be sent to a remote console waiting for the acess.

1.2                                          AIM OF THE PROJECT

House security matters and people always try to make life easier at the same time. That’s why we put up with this project, Face Recognition Door Lock System. Facial recognition is a well-established process in which the face is detected and identified out of the image. We aim to create a smart door, which secures the gateway on the basis of who we are. This method is secure enough, reliable and available for use.

1.3                                 OBJECTIVES OF THE PROJECT

At the end of this work, students involved shall be able to build a device that perform the following tasks:

  • To detect faces real
  • To recognize the detected faces by the use of a suitable
  • To update the class attendance register after a successful
  • To design an architecture that constitutes the various components working

1.4                                     PURPOSE OF THE PROJECT

The purpose of this work is to ensure that our daily live and properties are secured.

1.5                                       SCOPE OF THE PROJECT

We are setting up to design a system comprising of two modules. The first module (face detector) is a mobile component, which is basically a camera application that captures student faces and stores them in a file using computer vision face detection algorithms and face extraction techniques. The second module is a desktop application that does face recognition of the captured images (faces), then stores the results in a database for future analysis.

1.6                        SIGNIFICANCE OF THE PROJECT

This system offers its user with simple, efficiently manageable software that provides a platform to maintain security. The importance of this system is as below:

  1. Removes the risk of Manual Errors

Facial recognition software gives the user a means of securing their assets, by further removing human mistakes such as loosing your door key or forgetting your password.

  1. Automated plus Accurate

Face recognition precisely reports all unauthorized attempt of the system. The identification procedure is spot-on every single time at a speed that is now practically possible. This scheme can match thousands of operators in less than a second, plus the software offers info that is 100% precise without you lifting a finger.

  1. Saves Time

There is no requisite for employees to touch the surface of the scheme to clock in plus out. Facial recognition permits user to in and out in seconds, instantly. This saves time and effort, resulting in a satisfactory schooling environment.

  1. Upsurges Security

It only permit access only for the authorized user.

  1. Easily Installable

Facial recognition systems are very easy to install. You can easily integrate one of the leading benefits of Integrated Biometric facial schemes. These are easy towards programming into your firm’s PC system. Most of the systems would work with the software that you have by now installed.

1.7                                 PROJECT JUSTIFICATION

This project serves to automate the prevalent traditional tedious and time wasting methods of security door locking using keypad, password or finger print. The use of smart door through face detection and recognition will increase the security of the area it is applied.

Applications of face recognition are widely spreading in areas such as criminal identification, security systems, image and film processing [5]. The system could also find applications in all authorized access facilities.

1.8                                          APPLICATION OF THE PROJECT

This device can also be used for places like:

  1. home
  2. offices
  3. industries,etc.

1.9                            PROBLEM AND LIMITATION OF THE PROJECT

  1. It can only detect face from a limited distance.
  2. It cannot repeat live video to recognize missed faces.
  3. In a case whereby the user’s face changed due to accident or any other form of disfiguring, this device will not permit access to the user.

1.10                                      PROJECT WORK ORGANISATION

The various stages involved in the development of this project have been properly put into five chapters to enhance comprehensive and concise reading. In this project thesis, the project is organized sequentially as follows:

Chapter one of this work is on the introduction to this study. In this chapter, the background, aim, significance, objective, purpose, applications, problem identification, limitation and problem of this work was discussed.

Chapter two is on literature review of the study. In this chapter, all the literature pertaining to this work was reviewed.

Chapter three is on design methodology. In this chapter all the method involved in this study were discussed.

Chapter four is on test and result analysis. All testing that result accurate functionality was analyzed.

Chapter five is on conclusion, recommendation and references.
